The intricately detalied pickle castor stands approximately 12 1/2 tall. The derby silver company was founded in 1872 near the housatonic river in connecticut. Showrooms were established in new york city, chicago, and san francisco. The logo at the time featured an anchor with the words dreby silver company or it.

(just like the one on this item) in 1898, the plant merged with the international silver company, a consortium of connecticut silver companies. After the merger, items were marked with either the international silver ocmpany logo, just derby or factory b (also referring to the derby plant).

The base is also marked quadruple plate. Quadruple plated silver was some of the best made during the late 19th century. Within the silver-manufacturing industry, standard silver plate used just 2 troy ounces of pure silver to electroplate 144 teaspoons, but quadruple plate used 8 troy ounces of silver to plate the same 144 spoons.
